Trifolium pratense
(Meadow clover or red clover)

Phytotherapy

Main components 
  • Carbohydrates: arabinose, glucose, glucuronic acid, rhamnose.
  • Coumarin: coumarin, medicagol.
  • Isoflavones: biochanin, daidzein, formononetin, genistein, pratensin…
  • Saponins: heterosides from soyasapogenols.
  • Essential oils

Indications

  • Dermatology: Red clover is used to treat chronic eczema and psoriasis.
  • Respiratory system: Its antispasmodic and expectorant properties make it useful for treating whooping cough.
  • Diuretic: Red clover is used as an adjunct in the treatment of gout and rheumatism. 
  • Menopause: Due to its content in isoflavones, Trifolium pratense can be used to treat symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, nervousness and osteoporosis.

Dosage

Internal use in adults: 40 to 80 drops of mother tincture (MT), 2 to 3 times per day
External use: cream made with 10 to 15% of Trifolium pratense MT. 1 teaspoon of MT in 250 ml of boiling water: to clean the affected area or to be used as a compress.

Precautions and side effects
Since Trifolium pratense contains coumarin, it should not be taken with anticoagulant drugs. It should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, due to its phytoestrogen content. It may also interfere with hormone replacement therapy.

Homeopathy 

Characteristics:
Excessive salivation. Feeling of fullness and congestion of salivary glands, followed by a significant increase in saliva flow. Development of early mumps symptoms.  
 
Cradle cap with dry scale-like crust.

Torticollis.

Cancerous diathesis: Slows the growth of cancerous tumours. Prevents cancer from ulcerating.

Symptoms:

  • Head: Non-restful sleep. Confusion upon waking accompanied by a migraine. Memory loss. Weakness of the anterior lobe of the brain. Impression that the head is filled with blood. Head feels hot.
  • Nose: Rhinitis resembling hay fever – small quantities of mucus, with irritation. Hay fever. 
  • Mouth: Very heavy salivation.
  • Throat: Sore throat and hoarseness.
  • Larynx: Feeling that the larynx is filled with impurities. Hoarseness and difficulty breathing. Shortness of breath improved in cold air.
  • Cough: Occurs when outdoors. Spasmodic, whooping-cough-like coughing that gets worse at night. Coughing due to whooping cough, measles and tuberculosis.
  • Feeling that lungs are filled with blood. Person feels like he is breathing in hot air. Chills with cough at night. 
  • Torticollis: Improved by heat and friction.
  • Hands and feet are cold.  Tingling, prickly sensation in the palms.
Application: Aggravated in enclosed space and upon waking. Improved outdoors.
