Ecology and Phytosociology

Hornbeam is a social tree, excellent in coppices, and not very demanding of soil conditions. Planted among other species, it protects them by improving the humus.

Indications for Use

  • Treats thrombocytopenia (platelet deficiency), particularly acquired through auto-immunization and drug-induced immunoallergies.
  • Treats thrombocytopenia following splenectomy.
  • Treats acquired thrombocytopathy, particularly drug-induced (e.g., purpura).
  • Treats intoxication due to anticoagulants (in association with Cornus sanguinea).
  • Treats drug-induced polyarteritis nodosa.
  • Acts on the larynx, pharynx, and trachea, by relieving spasms and healing mucosae in rhinitis, sinusitis, and chronic bronchitis.
  • Treats uremia and uricacidemia.

Complementary Treatment

Its properties are enhanced when combined with the following plant.

  • Cornus sanguinea: Treats hemorrhage due to anticoagulants.

Cytological and Coagulatory Effects

  • Stimulates the megacaryocytic cell line, as shown on myelogram.
  • Increases reduced transverse constants, by quantitative and qualitative increase of platelets. Increases PTT, shortens longitudinal constants, and shortens prolonged bleeding times. Therefore, do not use for long periods without checking platelet count!
