Ecology and Phytosociology

The hawthorn does not require specific soil conditions. Its wood is hard and heavy. It enjoys active growth and considerable longevity. Widespread throughout Europe, with the exception of olive country, the hawthorn grows in oak stands, oak and ash calcareous woodlands and sub-mountainous ash woodlands.
