Ecology and phytosociology
This species is originally from Syria but naturalized to the South of France, Corsica and Algeria. It requires full light, dry soil and exposure to heat. The olive tree is a strong species that has a long life. Its wood is compact and uniform. The wild olive tree, which is also called the oleaster, grew spontaneously across the Mediterranean Basin. Its growth is limited mostly by Northern cold and draught (Egypt), but it can develop successfully in California, South Africa and Australia.
