Obsidian is a volcanic glass rock rich in silica. It is of grey, dark green, red or black colour and it comes from acid lava. Minerals are formed gradually as the thick lava rich in silica comes in contact with the air and cools slowly.
Pre-Columbian civilizations used to carve it to make tools and weapons with sharp edges. The Aztecs used obsidian knives in human sacrifices. They called it the “divine stone.” The Incas polished obsidian to fashion it into divination mirrors or magical objects with powerful waves, including instruments with thin plaques of obsidian rattling in the wind to protect from demons. The Apaches made talismans to improve their sight to better see their enemies but also to better know themselves. Called “Apache tear or Celestial Eye”, the obsidian allows connection to the divine source and to protect against negative energies.
